Rwanda Genocide: The First Conviction Kaylee Schmit Ms. Sandbulte Advanced Composition January 11, 2016 Kaylee Schmit Ms. Sandbulte Advanced Composition January 11, 2016 Rwanda Genocide: The First Conviction Rwanda is a small country in Africa, made up of three ethnic groups: the Hutus, who held the majority of the population; the Tutsis were only a small portion of the population; and there were also very few Twa. All three groups spoke Kinyarwanda. There were differences in the appearances of the Hutus and Tutsis, so that made it easy to identify their ethnicity. Tutsis were identified as light-skinned and tall, while Hutus were darker-skinned and short. Although there were more Hutus, the Tutsis were in control. (â€Å"Rwanda genocide of 1994†) On April 6, 1994, a plane with the President of Rwanda on board was shot down, killing everyone inside. It was not identified who or what group caused the crash, but it was blamed on the Tutsis. Hutu extremists began to kill all Tutsis. â€Å"Two major militia groups played a role in the killing of the Tutsis, the Interahamwe which means those who attack together and the Impuzamugambi (those who have the same goal)†(â€Å"Rwanda genocide of 1994†). Radio broadcasters made the killings worse by referring to the Tutsis as â€Å"cockroaches† that should be exterminated. One method that was used to kill the Tutsis was machetes. The extremists used the machetes to hack and chop away at the victims. Another method was rape.
