The Elusive Promise Of Indigenous Development Rights,...
How are social movements informed by culture? What roles can culture play in advancing social movements? These are two important questions raised in Karen Engleââ¬â¢s The Elusive Promise of Indigenous Development: Rights, Culture, Strategy. Asking how indigenous advocacy has gotten where it is, Engle offers a provocative examination of international, regional, and domestic law related to indigenous peoples (and other groups that have ââ¬Å"piggy-backedâ⬠on the successes of indigenous movements). A critical legal scholar, Engle starts her query by asking the tough questions. Rather than assuming that the indigenous rights movementââ¬â¢s conquests have been always for the better, she questions instead the movementââ¬â¢s early fundamental choices and their ââ¬Å"unintended consequencesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"dark sides.â⬠This critical look at the evolution of indigenous rights (which, she contends, are largely based on different versions of ââ¬Å"cultureâ⬠) is critical for reassessing indigenous advocacy, and moving it beyond essentialized and reified understandings of culture and identity. Engle is highly critical of ââ¬Å"strategic essentialism,â⬠which, despite the advances it has enabled in indigenous advocacy, has ultimately failed to challenge the law or push for its transformation. The very tool that once enabled indigenous advocacy to gain a first port of entry into law now stalls indigenous development, the ultimate goal of indigenous advocacy. ââ¬Å"Deploy[ing] a self-conscious strategy of multidisciplinarity thatShow MoreRelatedList Of Some Papers And Presentations3063 Words à |à 13 Pagesfrom constructivism theory, international law approach. All three groups spoke Kinyarwanda. There were differences in the appearances of the Hutus and Tutsis, so that made it easy to identify their ethnicity. Essay about Analysis of Hamlet by William Shakespeare
Hamletââ¬â¢s deadly grieving producing a fatal end It is an innate human quality to fear death and what is to come; it is the fear of suffering and anguish. People typically grieve over the loss of a friend or loved one. In William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Hamlet, Hamletââ¬â¢s obsessive thoughts about the deaths of others lead to his timely demise. The deaths of his father, Ophelia, and Polonius have different impacts on Hamletââ¬â¢s state of mind. His fatherââ¬â¢s death invokes revengeful thoughts of killing the King. Opheliaââ¬â¢s death skews Hamletââ¬â¢s vision of death. The death of Polonius shows the repercussions of Hamletââ¬â¢s aggressive impulse. Clearly, Hamlet is fascinated by death throughout the play. Although this is deeply rooted in his character, his obsessiveâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Hamlet dearly loved his father. He became enraged when his fatherââ¬â¢s life was viciously taken away by Claudius, so that he could become king of Denmark. This leads to Hamletââ¬â¢s savage behavior to kill Claudi us and furthermore drives his aptitude along a deathly path to later construct his own death. Hamlet appears to deeply grieve when Ophelia dies. Ophelia was believed to be hinting at a pregnancy and self-abortion. Hamlet says to the king, you must wear your rue with a difference (IV, v, 180). The rue being a common herb used to induce abortion. Just prior to Hamlet finding out that Ophelia is dead, the gravedigger presents him with the skull of his unborn son, Yorik. Hamlet thinks this is humorous and makes some jokes about carrying Yorik on his back and dressing him up in thick makeup to seem alive. When everyone shows up in this scene to stick Opheliaââ¬â¢s body in the ground, there was a debate about whether she could be laid in consecrated earth as she had had an abortion. This makes Hamlet extremely angry, enough to kill Ophelias father for not letting her have an abortion in the first place. Ophelia was obviously very dear to Hamlet and he expressed this when Ophelia is in her grave, ââ¬Å"I loved Ophelia; forty thousand brothers could not, with all their quantity o f love,â⬠(V, i, 263). Abortion, The, And The Constitution - 932 Words
One of the strongest arguments for abortion is the government has no right to interfere with a womanââ¬â¢s reproductive health decisions. The United States is not ruled by God, and the constitution is a non-religious document which affords us a right to privacy. The Supreme Court agreed with this argument as evident by their decision in the Roe vs. Wade case of 1973. Seven Supreme Court justices ruled in favor of Roe while two dissented. Blackmun, one of the justices in favor, based his decision on three arguments: First, abortion laws were originally intended to protect the mother, not the fetus. Second, abortion procedures were improved and safer. Finally, the fetus had not been granted legal status as a person. The following excerpt is from ââ¬Å"Roe vs Wade: Abortion and a Womanââ¬â¢s Right to Privacyâ⬠by Melissa Higgins. ââ¬Å"Regarding the Fourteenth Amendment, Texasââ¬â¢s abortion law violated the due process clause, which protects a personââ¬â¢s right to p rivacy from state action. This included a womanââ¬â¢s right to end her pregnancy. On this point, Blackmun wrote, The Constitution does not explicitly mention any right of privacy. In a line of decisions, however. . . the Court has recognized that a right of personal privacy, or a guarantee of certain areas or zones of privacy, does exist under the Constitution. . . This right of privacy. . . is broad enough to encompass a womanââ¬â¢s decision to decide whether or not to terminate her pregnancyâ⬠(Higgins, 2013, p. 95) The court also established thatShow MoreRelatedAbortion and the California Constitution Essay1903 Words à |à 8 PagesThrough out the history of the constitution of california there has been a number of attempts to change how abortion in teens is handled. Of course, according to the virtues borne by the system of democracy, every single human being may express his or her point of view through all kinds of media.
